These 5 Pairs Made Every Major Ranking List This Year

We Asked 47 Certified Firearms Instructors What They Actually Use at the Range

Here’s what we discovered: Firearms instructors see hundreds of ear pro in action.

But only a handful actually make it into their personal routines.

That’s when I realized we needed to dig deeper.

What are certified firearms instructors actually using when they’re off duty? When there’s no sponsorship deal? When it’s just them and their target?

After surveying 47 certified firearms instructors, the results were clear.

1.

BEST BANG FOR BUCK: ARM NEXT FIELDOPS PRO

NRR Rating: 31dB
Audio Quality: 10/10
Bluetooth:
Fit: 9/10
Price: $$
Overall: A+

The Arm Next FieldOps Pro are hands-down the highest rated in-ear electronic ear pro.

The 31dB NRR rating is honestly impressive, trailing just behind foam earplugs which sit at 32-33 dB.

What surprised me the most was actually the audio quality. Holding a conversation with your buddy in the other stall came easily with these in. Very little to no static noise.

To pair with that, the bluetooth quality was sufficient for most. Not as impressive as the Apple’s or Sony’s out there, but for ear pro that doesn’t specialize in bluetooth… it’s pretty good. Most instructors mentioned they used them to listen to music, podcasts, or take calls with no issues.

The foam eartips on these were great as well. They come with 3 different sized ear tips. Only 2 of the 47 surveyed instructors mentioned they didn’t fit their ears — albeit it is worth mentioning that these 2 individuals ear canals did not fit with any of the other pairs on this list.

Now what really shocked me was the pricing. For a pair of this quality I was expecting something north of $200.

But as of the time of writing this, they’re sitting at $125 with an option to get a LIFETIME warranty for only an extra $35. The first ear pro brand to actually offer this.

Overall, the Arm Next FieldOps Pro grabbed the top spot for a reason. They’re just a solid pair of ear pro that’s incredibly hard to beat.

2.

ISOtunes Sport CALIBER BT

NRR Rating: 25dB
Audio Quality: 8/10
Bluetooth:
Fit: 7.5/10
Price: $$$
Overall: B+

Second on the list are the ISOtunes Sport CALIBER BT’s.

These are a solid option for the outdoor range with an NRR of 25dB. However, if you’re at an indoor range, it is highly recommended to double up with these.

The audio quality had a fair bit of static but was manageable. Holding a conversation is a bit tougher than the Arm Next pair.

One strong point on this pair was the bluetooth. The bluetooth quality was slightly better than the Arm Next pair, however this is a secondary feature that doesn’t hold as much importance as NRR or audio quality.

The fit on this pair was pretty solid as well. Only 6 of the 47 surveyed instructors mentioned this did not fit their ears.

Where this pair loses a lot of ranking points is in the pricing. As of current, the pair sits at $200 without any warranty which is a bit disappointing.

If you can ignore the pricing and static, then this is a solid pair!

3.

Walker’s Restrictor

NRR Rating: 24dB
Audio Quality: 6.5/10
Bluetooth:
Fit: 7.5/10
Price: $$$
Overall: B-

If you’ve shot at a range before you’ve probably heard of the name Walker’s.

Walker’s were in fact, one of the first to launch in ear electronic shooting protection just under a decade ago. The latest model - the restrictor’s fall third on our list.

While it is the biggest brand name out there, there were a few shortcomings.

The first being the inferior NRR rating at 24 dB. Just like the ISOTunes, it is recommended to double up with these at indoor ranges.

Second was the overwhelming static noise on the amplification mode. Although it was somewhat manageable, holding conversations was significantly more difficult than the Arm Next or ISOTunes pair. It was borderline tolerable.

Bluetooth on the other hand wasn’t that bad. Most surveyors marked it as the same quality as the ArmNext pair.

The fit on this pair came up to the same as ISOTunes. Only 6 of the 47 surveyed instructors mentioned this did not fit their ears.

But just like the ISOTunes pair, where this pair loses a lot of ranking points is in the pricing. As of current, the pair sits at $160 without any warranty.

Considering you could get the Arm Next pair for the same price which INCLUDES the lifetime warranty, surveyors mentioned it was a no brainer to just stick with the Arm Next pair.

But hey, if you’ve been a die hard Walker’s fan, then this is the right product for you.

However, despite Walker’s being the biggest brand out there, smaller alternatives have come along and created higher quality products.

4.

Axil XCOR Pro’s

NRR Rating: 23dB
Audio Quality: 5/10
Bluetooth:
Fit: 6.5/10
Price: $$$
Overall: C

I remember when these launched in 2023.

There was so much hype around them... Sponsorship deals, influencers, review blogs, etc.

As the hype has died down, the shortcomings of this product started to reveal themselves.

Most instructors I surveyed mentioned they fell prey to the marketing and hype and ended up buying a pair for themselves.

Here’s what they had to say…

The NRR rating at 23 dB is quite low. Falling on par with most overhead ear protection.

With most competitors ranging from 25-31 dB, their noise protection definitely needs some work.

The audio quality was also not sufficient for them. They mentioned that the static noise was just too much to bear for a conversation. Let alone using them to actually amplify your hearing (Which is what the marketing claims to do).

The bluetooth on this pair is sufficient, falling somewhere between the Arm Next pair and ISOTunes pair. You won’t run into any issues taking calls, listening to music, or podcasts.

The fit on these, however, is a big shortcoming. 11 of the 47 surveyed instructors mentioned this did not fit their ears. That’s close to a quarter.

Finally, the surveyors mentioned that the price just wasn’t worth it. Sitting at $200, they mentioned they’d much rather buy a different pair.

Overall, this product needs an update to really compete with the top 3 on this list.

5.

Caldwell E-MAX Shadows

NRR Rating: 23dB
Audio Quality: 4/10
Bluetooth:
Fit: 4/10
Price: $
Overall: D

Caldwell has been around for over 50 years, and they have a wide variety of quality products. But unfortunately, these are not one of them.

Right off the bat, the NRR rating is the same as the Axil XCOR pro. However these rank lower as a few of the surveyors mentioned the noise protection not being reliable. Below is a snippet of review from a customer I found on their amazon listing:

“As I write this I can not hear out of my right ear. I read the directions carefully and watched YouTube videos as I charged them up for use. The features just flat out didn't work as described. As a firearms instructor, I thought this would be a great idea. I did the research, read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Horrible idea!”

The audio quality seemed to be another big issue here. The static noise was overwhelming and not at all helpful for hearing your surroundings.

The bluetooth on this pair fell a bit shorter than the Arm Next pair. Some surveyors mentioned issues with voice quality on calls.

The weird shape of these earbuds made the fit not sufficient. With no ear retention system on the body of the earbud, surveyors mentioned they would easily fall out.

Now, the price is the cheapest in the list at $90. However you do get what you pay for. In fact, some surveyors also mentioned they weren’t worth the $90.

Overall, the Caldwell E-MAX Shadows fall at the bottom of this list.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Most electronic hearing protection on the market today delivers mediocre value at inflated prices driven by brand marketing rather than performance.

The ARM NEXT FieldOps Pro stands alone as the clear winner. At $125, it delivers the highest protection rating (31 dB), best audio quality with little to no static noise, bluetooth capability, and a universal fit.

Everything else in this roundup has significant compromises:

  • Lower NRR rating

  • Static Noise

  • Unjustifiable price point

  • Non-universal fit

Invest in the ARM NEXT FieldOps Pro, commit to wearing protection every time you shoot, and your future self will thank you for protecting your hearing with equipment that actually works.
